Financial Aid for Indiana-Kentucky Synod
Candidates for Rostered Ministry

The Indiana-Kentucky Synod has been the grateful recipient of bequests and other gifts that have been invested and designated for the financial support of candidates for rostered ministry from our synod.

  1. All scholarship funds are limited to candidates who have received a positive Entrance Decision from the Synod Candidacy Committee. Reception of these funds is not retroactive if that Entrance Decision occurs after an applicant begins theological education.

  2. All "Entranced" candidates who are in seminary full-time receive $1000.00 per academic year for up to three years. This Student Assistance Scholarship is paid directly to their seminary in two equal installments, one each in the fall and early spring, to be applied to tuition. Candidates do not receive this scholarship while on internship. There is no application necessary for these funds. We only need to know where you are attending seminary and that you are a full-time student.

  3. After dispersing the Student Assistance Scholarship funds, which typically amount to about $25,000 per year, the harvest from the endowments normally provides additional funds we can share as scholarships for a few candidates. These scholarship funds typically begin at $500 and move up in $500 increments.

  4. A Financial Aid Team for Candidacy (affectionately referred to hereafter as FAT CAN) has been established to oversee the dispersal of these funds. This team's responsibilities include receiving applications and making decisions about who will receive this scholarship money and how much each person will receive. Applicants for these funds do not need to be full-time seminary students, but they must have a positive Entrance Decision from the candidacy committee and be actively engaged in theological education and other aspects of progress through candidacy. It is expected that these scholarship funds will be applied to costs directly related to candidacy and preparation for rostered leadership.

  5. Scholarship funds are available for Spring Term 2007! The application deadline is Wednesday November 22. The decisions will be made by FAT CAN in December, after which applicants will be notified of the Team's decisions. Funds will be dispersed in January 2007. Access the application form in PDF format here. Fill it out and submit it to Pastor Bill Gafkjen in the synod office via fax (317-254-5666) or postal mail by the stated deadline. Please note there is also an authorization form to bring to your school's financial aid office. Prompt attention to this will expedite the process.

The current round of applications is for Spring Term 2007. Applications for the 2007-2008 school year will be available in the spring and decisions for that school year will be made before summer.
