Scripture Readings from the
Rev. Common Lectionary for the Day, Oct. 7

Psalm 37:1-10
The Psalm can be a reminder what our elders can tell us about the benefit of waiting patiently.

Habakkuk 1:1-4; 2:1-4 Habakkuk’s question why a just God is “silent when the wicked swallow those more righteous than they” (1:13 NRSV), receives an answer: God is still sovereign and in Gods’ own way and at the proper time will deal with the wicked. This may be the life lesson, our elders can teach us, and witness to.

2 Timothy 1:1-14 Paul praises the faith of Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice which taught Timothy well.

Luke 17:5-10 Sermon thoughts by Rev. Michael Cobbler

God of our parents and our God, whose Spirit blows life from generation to generation, blow among us this day. Transform our trembling hearts with courage enough to bear one another’s suffering. Strengthen our will with passion enough to witness to your goodness and teach us to trust you enough that our children may also know your Spirit in them, until that great day when all generations have finished their charge and are at rest in you. Amen.

Petition for the Prayer of the Church:

We give thanks for the elders among us and for their ministry to, with and among this congregation. May their examples of living the faith be an inspiration for our lives. Let us bless the Lord; thanks be to God.

For a Cross-Generational Emphasis

Use 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 for one of the readings and divide it up into three sections:

Verses 1 – 3 read by a child/youth
Verses 4 – 7 read by a middle aged person
Verses 8 – 12 read by an older adult
Verse 13 spoken by all three in unison

Write or name what God has done for you in the past.

Tuesday
Ephesians 3:14-17a NIV

Wednesday
Ephesians 3:17b-19 NIV

More Ideas for Celebrating the Ministry
of Older Adults

Have a hymn sing before or after worship
Solicit your senior's favorite hymns and use those as liturgy elements.
Honor your senior members at a carry-in after worship for various reasons, i.e. Most miles spend doing volunteer ministry….. ; most faithful at worship …. ; being a child/youth magnet; etc. You get the idea! Check out www.oldlutheran.org for fun rewards.
Make a picture board showing seniors at "work" doing their various ministries within and the congregation and beyond.
Lift up your homebound and nursing home residence who still participate in the life of the church through their prayers.
Have a storytelling festival where senior members tell of a significant event of their faith journey; or have the stories revolve around your congregation. Make this part of a social gathering such as a pot-luck or ice-cream social, family fun day.
Share a meal with your parishioners at the care facility/senior residence they reside.
