Tour de Revs: Domestique Challenge

A domestique is a bicycle road racer who works solely for the benefit of his or her team and its leader. The French domestique literally translates as “servant.” Unique among athletes, the domestique’s own performance is considered unimportant as long as he/she can help the leader achieve a better position in the race.

Although the Tour de Revs is not a professional bicycle road race, or a race of any type for that matter, the Revs consider themselves domestiques, servants of the One who has sent them on their adventure. They invite all who so desire to become a domestique and enter into a covenant relationship with them and those they intend to help; the people who lack adequate food and water, clothing and shelter, the 854 million people who lack these daily essentials.

The Tour de Revs Domestique Challenge has three expectations:

(1) that the domestique make an ongoing monthly contribution of $10 or more to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal or a charitable organization of his or her choice whose purpose is to alleviate the pain and suffering of hunger and poverty and assist in the establishment of sustainable lifestyles for those they serve,

(2) commit to securing three more people within 30 days who will covenant with them to do the same, and

(3) work with advocacy groups dedicated to relieving hunger and poverty issues.

Such a commitment should not be burdensome nor consume an unreasonable amount of time. In fact, it should be anticipated with enthusiasm knowing one’s efforts, when combined with those of family and friends, neighbors and colleagues (God’s math doesn’t just add up, it multiplies) can produce results far exceeding initial expectations.

It should also be anticipated with confidence knowing one does not enter into the challenge alone, but is supported not only with the help of a fellow domestique but also the One who has sent all on this adventure.
