Answers to the Worship Quiz

1. When is a worship service liturgical?

c. When the people participate

The word ‘liturgy’ comes from a greek word – leitourgia – which means “the people’s work.” Its two root words are laos, which means people (from which we get ‘laity’), and ergon, which means work. The precise meaning of  the word is “to render service to the people” (see Theological Dictionary of the New Testament), or to discharge a public duty.

2. What is contemporary music?

d. Good question!

Some “hymns” have been  written in the last few years (see ELW 497 by Robert Hobby, organist at Trinity English, Fort Wayne). Some songs used by praise bands were written twenty years ago. So ‘contemporary’ is really not a very good adjective.
